One of my pet hates is inspirational sayings. One of my mind games is turning them around or altering them. I think they make just as much or even more sense after.

Poverty can't buy happiness either.

Women are OK but you can't beat the real thing.

From mighty oak trees little acorns grow.

The carrot is mightier than the stick.

As ye reap, so shall ye sow.

The best way to get over one man is to get under another one.

The only thing better than an understanding woman is an underlying one.

He who is lost ….. hesitates.

A hard man is good to find.

If you think you are a wit - you are half right

I just hate intolerant people - they really piss me off.

Nostalgia is just not the same as it used to be.

Deny everything - it makes it easier to change your story if you to.

not a gynecologist but I don't mind taking a look.

The earth will inherit the meek.

The mind is like a parachute – except in the direst emergency it's better to keep it firmly closed and sit on it.

Time is on nobody's side.

If nobody was there to see, how do you know tree in the forest fell?

Cowardice is the better part of discretion.

At my town flat there's a stray cat th*t I've been feeding. She wont let me pat her but she comes in the cat flap to be fed and recently her belly was just getting bigger and bigger. When I came back from my weekend away she was suddenly all slender again. Today I found the evidence.

I've never had kittens before. I was raised in a responsible household th*t only had neutered cats. I suppose this girl will be off to the vet as well, if I ever manage to catch her. One of the kittens can have a home at my farm and I am not sure about the rest. Don't even know how many yet, they are just one squirming mass.

Dark Sun

I've been reading Dark Sun, the biography of Georg Dibbern, who was a mate of my granddad from before the first world war until his death in the early sixties. Dibbern was from Germany and was in NZ when the first world war began, so was interned as an enemy alien. He was then deported to Germany where he married and fathered three girls but he lost everything in the hyper inflation of the twenties and couldn't find work in the depression of the thirties. He managed to acquire a boat and abandoned his family ( with his wife's blessing to some degree ) to set sail with a couple of mates. He claimed, correctly, that his family would be better off without him. In fact his departure letters read more like suicide notes and I think he was a broken man at that time.

They had barely enough basic provisions for the crossing to Dover in England but by working and scrounging, two of them continued and eventually reached NZ again. Fate was kinder to him here and he refitted his boat, saw his mate settled on some land, took aboard a y0ung NZ woman and sailed by stages to Canada. By then he was getting warnings from friends in Germany not to return because of the rise of the Nazis ( he was socialist and pacifist ). As war loomed he was expelled from Canada and also the US. The Nazis cancelled his passport to try to force him to return to Germany but he sailed on and, with few options, found his way back to NZ where he was interned again as we were *t war by then. His b00k of his adventures ( Quest ) was published while he was interned and drew the attention of some prominent figures, most notably Henry Miller.

NZ intended to deport him again after WW2 but he managed to get permission to sail away, still with the same now not quite so y0ung lady. He had kept in touch with his wife all this time and she was now totally destitute in post war Germany. It was not permitted to send m0ney or parcels from the British commonwealth countries to Germany, so Dibbern arranged for Miller to use the royalties from the b00k to send aid from the US. I never realised the scale of hardship in Germany *t th*t time. Official rations included such amounts as 200 grams of meat – month! 250 grams of fat month, later reduced to 150 grams. Three slices of bread a day. Half a cup of skim milk a day. 200 kg of coal for the winter. No sug*r for two years. Easter each person got an egg! This was some 18 months to two years after the end of the war, not the immediate aftermath.

A letter from his oldest girl, by then a medical student, I found very moving.
“It is a good feeling for us, Germans th*t we are, the lowest in the world today, th*t there are men, who think us not only for beasts but for men. Surely there are many things which we can't make good, which we only may regret and try to make better. I am ready to suffer for the cruelty they did the Jews and other men, for these were not worse than I. Had they to choose to be born as a Jew or not? Am I priviliged to be a German? I think the best privilige is to be a man. No man is allowed to make suffer other ones. Then he will always be punished. Now we have to eat the soup we have cooked....”
I believe it was such humility th*t helped heal the scars the Nazis had slashed across Europe and beyond and allowed Germany to rehabilitate herself.

Dibbern meanwhile had arrived in Tasmania, won a fortune with a lottery he was given, bought an island near Hobart and fathered another girl with his crew member. He tried to settle down there but the place he chose was too remote for his girlfriend and eventually she left. He followed her back to NZ but they never reunited and he died in Auckland, lonely and frustrated, still trying to refit his boat again for yet more voyages, still trying to get his second b00k published. He was an idealist and a dreamer, never very practical about things but he lived a remarkable life. I know he made a huge impression on my Mum. Like many people she thought he was wonderful and terrible all the same time.

Lots of people complain about unwanted contacts on alt. Fakes, scammers, far away, professional. They want alt to weed them all out so they only get messages from perfectly compatible matches. And yeah, I do it too, complaining about old farts hitting on young girls - I guess everybody likes to bitch a bit.

Well I have a suggestion. Start your own website and only allow people you find absolutely perfect to be on it. Course, it might remain a site of one member only

Life is Long

Rather than try to contradict another on her post I thought I would put my point of view in a post of my own. I say life is long! 3.5 billion years or so, and counting. More and more I am coming to see myself as just part of the enormous and unbelievably complex web of life. I am the product of my parents and their parents before them, all the way back to the first self replicating molecule. My children and grandchildren carry that heritage forward, for how long nobody knows. I am connected in various ways to other people, other creatures and plants and bacteria of many kinds. Some of them cannot live without me nor me without them. Others just choose to live or interact with me and me with them. Some enrich my life while others challenge it or threaten it, as mine does theirs.

And what if I consider just my own miserable life? Sixty something years, and God may grant me a few more yet. Is th*t short? If each day is savoured and enjoyed then I say th*t is a very long time indeed. It is the people running around because they feel they have to achieve things th*t find life to be short. Of course some of us are granted more time than others and I've been fortunate to have had a fair share, and health to be able to enjoy it. Yes, it seems like just recently I was the young buck in my profile pic, but th*t's only if I ignore everything th*t's happened in between. I look at the moon sometimes and it's like I could reach up and touch it. Because I can't see what's in between I lose the sense of distance. In my life, if I remember all the little details of people and events and good times and bad times then it seems like I've lived forever.

I know th*t when it's time to go I will still have things I want to do but in no way will I feel short changed. Until then I will continue to do the things th*t seem important to me, day by day.

Well, I know it shouldn't be and all th*t. We are all adults on alt after all. But it does seem a bit odd, a bit unseemly I suppose, when some eighteen year old chick begins a blog with a post that says nothing really except "hello", and there are all these comments from guys aged 42 to 69. To be fair, some of them were merely friendly and welcoming and one comment was even from a woman, but I can't help wondering what the young lady thinks of it all? Maybe she's flattered, but when I was th*t age anybody over 30 was just too old and wrinkly to bear thinking about!

I have no problem with a young woman taking up with an older guy if th*t's what she wants, but what makes all these guys think she might be interested in them? And then, why do they want such a young woman? I doubt it's to form a relationship with her. Maybe they really are altruistic enough to believe they can teach her things th*t will enrich her life? Or do they just think she might be gullible and they can get their rocks off on her young body? Because, if it's th*t last one, then it smacks of exploitation, and even though it's highly unlikely to actually happen, the idea th*t these guys are all trying for it is kind of disturbing. To me anyway.

Back from my five day weekend away. Two nights at the Awakeri hot springs with both kids and all the grandkids. (Also Nurse and the sons in law). Very old and shabby motel units but comfy enough and the hot water was glorious, especially for the girls after yet another adventure race.

I also visited Toi's Pa, which is one of the earliest human habitations in NZ. Toi came there in the middle of the twelfth century looking for his grandsons. He would not have been a young man and he would have seen some amazing places around the Pacific, but he decided this was the place to settle. You can see why.

For a seaman it's one of the most beautiful places imaginable. Toi's grandson eventually found him there around 1150 ad. The pa is on the ridge overlooking the Whakatane river mouth, the scene of Wairaka 's heroics two hundred years later. It's interesting that the original pa was not fortified but the parts built after the great migration of 1350 were. Either the people who came in that later wave were more warlike or maybe the increased numbers put pressure on the available resources and caused conflict.

The introduction of the kumara by this later group did not go entirely smoothly. The new arrivals had no experience of winter and the locals had no experince of growing or storing kumara, so it all rotted and died the first winter. The Horouta waka ( canoe ) was sent back to the islands to fetch more, which it duly did. These guys were no desperadoes who just happened to wash ashore here. They knew their way around the vastness of the Pacific by reading the stars and waves. They followed a strategy of exploring against the prevailing wind so they could always get home if it all went tits up, which is why NZ was pretty much at the end of their route. Of course, once they knew where they were going it was no problem to sail downwind.

Leaders and Rulers

There are two types of top politicians in the world, the leaders and the rulers. While these terms might seem synonymous, there are some major differences.

A leader will try to gauge the will of the people and garner support for policy initiatives, then allow others to carry through with implementing them. This type of politician may fail to achieve some of their aims but also may succeed in achieving things far beyond their direct authority. A classic example is Jacinda Adern. She believed in implementing a capital gains tax and appointed a study group which heavily recommended this. But the mood of the people was against it, the numbers in parliament did not support it, so she walked away from it. Not just temporarily either. She publicly stated that she would not try it again in her time as PM. By contrast, the gun control law was passed very rapidly, with only one dissenting vote in parliament. Th*t's unheard of! And now she is leading a meeting with such figures as Trudeau and Macron to try to keep the worst extremist violence off social media sites. How that will go remains to be seen.

A ruler on the other hand will stubbornly try to force through their view of how things should be. They will not worry if they alienate people but will rely on their direct authority to override any opposition. They will not easily back down or defer to the views of others. Sound like anyone you've heard of? The exploits of one I am thinking of are so well documented that I hardly need to list them here.

Some will support one style and others will support the other. I am not trying to make value judgements here. I have my preferences and others have theirs. I think a truly great politician needs to combine elements of each side, but those kind of people are few and far between.

As in politics, so in BDSM. Both involve interchanges of power and authority, just on a different scale. So which type of dom are you, the leader or the ruler? Or which type do you prefer?

Received my new eftpos card. Seems I am now a non-person. All I have to do is visit my branch, show some ID to prove I am really nobody at all and load a PIN, then I am good to go.
